According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), since the early this year, , Vietnam’s tuna exports to most traditional markets has increased sharply over the same period last year.
According to statistics from the Vietnam General Department of Customs, by the end of June 15, 2010, Vietnam had exported 37,500 tonnes of tuna worth over 147 million USD, up 71.2% in quantity and up 98% in value compared with the same period last year.
Currently, the US - the major market imported 15.000 tonnes of Vietnamese tuna worth over 75 million USD, up 103.8% in quantity and 179.8% in value over the same period last year.
Tuna exports to Japan by the end of June 15, 2010 also reached over 2,600 tons, valued at nearly 16 million USD, up 50.7% in quantity and 119.9% in value over the same period last year
However, the current export tax rate of Vietnam’s tuna to Japan under the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA) is still higher than that of some countries in the region like Thailand and the Philippines which makes Vietnam’s tuna difficult to compete in the Japanese market.
In addition, Vietnam’s tuna exports to Canada, Taiwan, Lebanon, Croatia, South Korea ... have also increased both in quantity and value.
Particularly, due to the effects of IUU Regulation (regulation on certification of exploited fisheries), tuna exports to EU in the first months of this year continuously declined.
By June 15th, 2010, tuna exports to EU reached about 7,000 tons, worth 24.6 million USD, down 14% in quantity and 6.6% in value over the same period last year. |
