The 33rd Session of Codex Alimentarius Commission was held in Geneva
Dr. Karen Hulebak (United States) - Chairman of the CAC with some vice presidents of Knud Ostergaard (Denmark), Sanjay Dave (India) and Ben Manyindo (Uganda) took turns to chair all plenary sessions of the Conference. Representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) had the opening speech and welcome the meeting.
The thirty – third session of Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) was successfully held in Geneva (Switzerland) from 5th to 9th, July, 2010.
Attending the Session this year are 471 delegates from 120 countries, member organizations and 37 international, intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations. The Vietnam delegation comprising representatives of the Vietnam Codex Committee, Department of Food Safety and Nutrition Institute under the Ministry of Health and the Science, Technology and Environment Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development attended the meeting.

In the spirit of expeditious working, after 5 days, the conference has completed the agenda including 15 content as expected. Although there is disagreement in some problems, , basically the meeting closed with great success through adoption of a series of Codex standards and documents, projects on setting new Codex standards as follows:
1. 38 Codex standards and related documents were unanimously adopted to put into application. Among the approved standards and documents, the important documents are the Code of practice for fish and fishery products (related to lobster and crab); Code of practice for sanitary with cholera bacteria in seafood; Codex standard for fermented milk drinks; maximum melamine in food and animal feed, and many other documents relating to hygiene and food safety, additives and contaminants in food, food labeling ...
2. The meeting also adopted 11 drafts of Codex Standards at Step 5 for further improvement. Among the drafts adopted in step 5, the Codex standards for fish sauce composed by Vietnam and Thailand; some drafts relating to tomatoes, smoked fish, and guides of risk assessment of drug-resistance in food, and nutrition labeling guides for lists of nutrients always are included the requirement of labeling ..
3. This year the Conference also approved 16 projects on setting new Codex standards and related documents. The noteworthy one is building standards of animal feed led by Switzerland, amending the Codex standard of salt, and amending Guide of code of hygiene practice for natural mineral water...
In addition to adoption of standards and standard drafts, the meeting also discussed various issues related to the activities of the Codex Technical Boards, the involvement and role of developing countries in building Codex standards. Dr.K Hulebak and three vice presidents were elected to keep the positions of president and vice president of CAC in the coming term. The 34th Session of the CAC is scheduled to be held in Geneva in July 2011.
