Shrimp prices reach record level in Mekong Delta
According to Bac Lieu Province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, shrimp prices are at very high level, shrimp breeders have enjoyed great profits. However, there are only a few households with leftover shrimp for sale. Thus, hosts of shrimp processing factories have faced severe shortages of materials for exports.
Shrimp prices in the Mekong Delta is growing at a very high level. On June 13th, in Ca Mau, Bac Lieu and Soc Trang, a kilogram of shrimp (20 heads per kilogram) fetched VND180,000-200,000; a kilo containing 30 shrimps sold at VND130,000-150,000; for smaller shrimp (40 heads per kilogram), farmers received VND110,000-120,000. These are the highest levels in nine years.
According to Bac Lieu Province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, shrimp prices are at very high level, shrimp breeders have enjoyed great profits. However, there are only a few households with leftover shrimp for sale. Thus, hosts of shrimp processing factories have faced severe shortages of materials for exports.
While shrimp prices have surged, tra fish prices continued plummeting, down to about VND15,000-16,000 a kilogram. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dao, director of Go Dang Seafood Company, with such a low price, tra fish breeders in the delta are suffering losses of VND500-1,000 for each kilogram of fish sold.
Mr.Dao expressed concern that European economic downturn have made Vietnam seafood exports to this market difficult. Tra fish prices are likely to continue sliding
