Atlas of Vietnam’s Precious Aquatic Species to be launched
According to Mr. Chu Tien Vinh, Deputy Director of the General Directorate of Fisheries, Vietnam’s fisheries sector has contributed greatly to the Vietnam’s economy. However, over the last few years aquatic resources in Vietnam have been overexploited, many species are at risk of extinction due to many different causes.
In Vietnam there are about 234 aquatic species in danger of extinction. The information was released at a press conference on June 14th, a launching ceremony of the book “Atlas of rare aquatic species in danger of extinction in Vietnam” released by General Directorate of Fisheries under Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development’s .

However, over the last few years aquatic resources in Vietnam have been overexploited, many species are at risk of extinction due to many different causes.
Vietnam has around 130,000 fishing vessels. Reducing the number of fishing boats to protect resources would make the livelihood of fishermen and their families as well more difficult . So rare aquatic species are required to be protected and regenerated, which is seen as a resolute measure
Also at the press conference, the General Directorate of Fisheries announced the approval of planning system for Vietnam’s marine protected areas by 2020.
According to the planning system, in the period 2010-2015, the system will have 16 marine reserves. For existing marine protected areas such as Nha Trang Bay, Phu Quoc, Nui Chua, Cu Lao Cham, competent agencies will conduct review, adjusting the plan and make detailed plans to build 11 remaining reserves in the system.
Besides the construction and adjustment of 16 marine protected areas, databases and systems of marine protected areas will be built at the same time, and gradually perfect the system of legal documents relating to marine protected areas management . Next, in the period 2016-2020 competent agencies will propose development plans to expand marine protected areas system and put into operation some new marine protected areas.
Total estimated investment for both phases is 460 billion VND, including funds from the state budget of 330 billion VND, local budget of 90 billion VND, support from international and non-governmental organizations of 40 billion VND.
