The increase of shrimp industry has stopped going down.
In the end of a year, shrimp export traditionally goes up very fast because of increasing demand in main markets such as Japan, USA and EU.

However, in the end of October this year, the increase of Vietnamese shrimp export has just stopped going down for months. According to the Custom-house, the quantity of shrimp exported in the first 10 months of 2009 is 170,283 tons and the value is 1.35 billion USD, 7.4% higher than last year in term of quantity and value.

Among the main market of Vietnamese shrimp export: USA, Japan and EU, only the quantity exported to EU increases by 22.2% to 33,689 tons and the value increases by 15% to 228.4 million USD. The quantity and value of shrimp exported to Japan and USA are both running down. In Japan, the export goes down by 4.5% in quantity and 2.8% in value. In USA, it declines by 6.2% in quantity and 15.3% in value.

Vietnam is still the main shrimp supplier of Japan nowadays but the competition with others, especially with Thailand, is more serious. In the first 9 months of 2009, the shrimp export to Japan of Thailand is 28.7% higher while the export of Vietnam is 11% lower. In 2008, in addition, Thailand has just reached the 3rd position from the 4th position following Vietnam, Indonesia and India.

From 2008 to 2009, Vietnam has just lost its 3rd position in exporting shrimp to USA following Thailand and Indonesia for 5th position following Ecuador and China too in the end of 3rd quarter 2009. In general, USA this year is supplied more than it needs due to the global financial crisis while its domestic quantity of shrimp is increasing. From another point of view, USA is trying to find the suppliers in its neighbor countries such as Mexico or Ecuador to reduce the spending on transportation. As a result, the needs of black tiger shrimp in USA are not going up anymore while the needs of vannamei keep very stable.

In the first 9 months of 2009, while shrimp export to USA and Japan decreases, it’s rising significantly in other markets such as Korea, China and ASEAN countries. It increases by 30.1% in value and 21.3 % in quantity in Korea, 92.4% in quantity and 72.8% in value in China, 37.5% in quantity and 35.1% in value.
