The Netherlands - Promising market of Vietnam tuna
In the EU market, the Netherlands is one of the largest Vietnam’s tuna import market and is the only one market where has a comprehensive positive growth both in quantity and value in the first half of October 2009

The tuna businesses judge that export to this market is quite promising and tend to increase as the demand of consumers is strongly increasing and the domestic power output of aquatic products is steadily decreasing. First half of October 2009, exporting tuna into the Netherlands reached 126 tons; it is worth $ 0.685 million, up 51.0% in amount and up to 25.0% in value over the same period in 2008.

On September of 2009, Vietnam tuna export has reached the sudden growth in volume (+ 20.5%) and value (+ 9.7%) over the same period last year, making many export enterprises feel more believable in the hope of completing the target of the year. However, the result of exporting on the first half of October 2009 is not good as they expected.

According to MARD, the impact of the storms in successive causes the decrease of catching volume, that makes the enterprises lack raw tuna for processing for the export. In addition, the purchasing power of tuna in some main markets has not recovered; therefore, the enterprises still have to solve problems about the market for this by themselves. The companies said that last some months of a year is often a "golden time" to do business because the import markets increase the goods volume in preparation for year-end holidays as Christmas, New Year ... but this year the preparation air is rather quiet.

As reported by the Bureau of Customs of Vietnam, the first half of October 2009, Vietnam export tuna has reached 2275 tons, worth $ 7.389 million, up 14.2% in volume, but decreased 3, 8% of the value of over the same period in 2008. Thus, from January 1 to October 15 of 2009, the whole country was exporting 42,000 tons of tuna, reached 134.837 million USD, down 3.9% in volume and 13.0% in value over the same period in 2008. Although the total export turnover of Vietnam’s tuna first half of October 2009 compared with first half of September 2009 dramatically reduced and compared to the same period in 2008, but export to some markets like the U.S. and Canada has continued growth with more stable and uniform since the previous months. First half of October 2009, exporting tuna to the U.S. increased 40.1% in volume and 16.0% in value; to Canada increased 37.4% in volume and 68.3% in value over the same period in 2008. Export turnover reached 3.349 million USD to the U.S., and to Canada reached 0.082 million USD.

On the contrary, export tuna to EU and Japan markets block declined continuously from January 1 to October 15, 2009. In particular, export to the EU decreased 34.5% in the volume and 25.3% in the value, to Japan decreased 35.4% in the volume and 45.0% in the value over the same period in 2008. According to the companies who have exported tuna to EU for a long time, the valid of IUU Regulation of the Council of the European Union (EC) has no more effective, while enterprises are having difficulty with completing procedures to get the certificate of exploitation in order to prove the legality of their products. In fact, most Vietnam aquatic food are caught in different areas by fishermen, then the companies purchase raw materials from fishermen for processing for export.
