On September 8th, in Can Tho, the Technology Application and Development Department (Ministry of Science and Technology) in collaboration with IBM Vietnam held a seminar with a theme of "Applications of Information Technology (IT) to improve competitiveness for aquatic products processing enterprises in Vietnam". The workshop aims at supporting seafood businesses seeking intelligent information technology solutions for application in product quality management from farming, processing to the transportation and distribution stages.

Russia was named a potential market for exporting seafood, said Duong Ngoc Minh, head of Managing Board for Export to Russia.

The US Department of Commerce (DOC) has made a preliminary decision on charging anti-dumping tariffs on imported Vietnamese pangasius from 1 August 2008 until 31 July 2009. Vietnamese firms have to pay a high tax rate of USD 4.22 per kg, a 100 - 120 percent jump from last year. As a result, pangasius companies will suffer heavy losses as well as face additional barriers in the US market.

So far, farmers in Vinh Chau have harvested shrimp on areas of 6,671 ha, out of the total shrimp farming area of 23,557ha.
